Amsterdam Beautiful offers lovely short stay serviced apartments in the famous Jordaan and Niewmarkt apartments in the old city center of Amsterdam. Each of these neighborhoods has small cafés and restaurants and are but quite picturesque. The Jordaan is also lively with markets and shops during the day, whereas the Old City is known more for its nightlife.
The Jordaan was developed in the 17th century for the working classes and the industry needed to service those living more extravagantly in the Old City Center and the Canal Ring. In this atmospheric, sometimes bohemian district the homes are charming and slightly narrower than the grand canal homes of the patrician Canal belt.
The Jordaan is probably the most famous neighbourhood in the Netherlands. Akin to the reputation enjoyed by London’s Cockneys, this once working-class bastion was renowned for tight community bonds, radical politics and a love for drink and over-the-top sing-a-longs. Maze-like streets offer hidden courtyards, cafés (both traditional and trendy), art galleries, quaint restaurants and speciality boutiques.
Several pitoresque canals cross the neighborhood. Shopping is excellent with, besides the small speciality shops, the Haarlemmerstraat / Haarlemmerdijk, the Westerstraat and the Rozengracht offering a great selection of shops, including a number of supermarkets.
Amsterdam has 8.863 houses and buildings from the 16th, 17th- and 18th-century – more historic buildings and sites than any other city in the world — and most of them are located in the old center — an area compact enough to traverse on foot.
Amsterdam’s medieval heart is divided into the Old Side and the New Side. Each side is separated by the Damrak with in the middle Dam Square with its former City Hall or ‘Stadhuis’, now the Dam square palace. Lively and full of restaurants, cafes, shops the Red Light District but also quaint markets and grand homes, here too are several beautiful canals, and sometimes surprisingly spacious homes.
